I love summer celebrating and you know I love holidays. Memorial day is just around the corner and then right after that 4th of July will be here before we know it! I’ve got some fun ideas to share with you for your summer celebrations in collaboration with Skittles! Everyone loves Skittles and you’re going to love the fun flavors in the American Mix! I’m totally in love with the mix of reds, white and blues in this candy mix and the flavors are just as delicious!
Because I’m a little OCD I opened up my two bags and divided all the colors into their own little glass containers. I loved how the separated skittles made a beautiful patriotic display! I made little printouts of each flavor for the display, and you can download that printable HERE for free.
What is better than eating candy? Eating candy flavored food! I’ve been really into cream sodas lately and thought- what would be better than a Skittles soda?! (answer- nothing!) I whipped up a Skittles syrup using the strawberry flavor, it’s super easy and there are so many possibilities of what you can create using it!
How to Make Skittles Syrup
To make the Skittles syrup you need 3 ingredients: Sugar, Water & Skittles. That’s it! I had already separated my Skittles out by color for the festive display so I chose the strawberry flavor to use in the syrup. Whichever skittles flavor you choose will be the flavor of the syrup. Simple Syrup is equal parts sugar and water and then you add your flavor. For the skittles syrup I melted 3 cups of sugar in 3 cups of water in a large saucepan over medium to high heat. Once the sugar was dissolved I removed it from the heat and added all the strawberry skittles from 2 bags of the American Mix, it was about 3/4 cup. I let the Skittles “steep” for about 5 minutes and then dumped the entire mixture through a strainer to catch the skittles. All the color had come off into the syrup to make it a pretty red and flavored just like a strawberry Skittle! Let the syrup cool and then put it into a container for pouring.
To make a Skittles soda you’ll fill a cup 1/2 way with ice, fill about a fourth of the cup with syrup the rest with club soda and then top with whipped cream. Stir and Enjoy! Yum. This will be a fun addition to your holiday celebrating this summer. You know all the kids (and adults alike) will love it! Everyone loves a cute paper straw so don’t forget to pick some of those up at Target while you’re there grabbing your fourth of July Skittles! There is a current cartwheel offer at Target for all the fun MARS candy! click HERE to see the discount.
Once this tasty syrup was on my counter I kept coming up with other ideas of what to do with it. A snow cone syrup was an obvious choice, I don’t own a snow cone machine (sad face) so I tested out making shaved ice in my blender. It kinda worked. Bottom line, I need a snow cone machine, obviously. If you have a snow cone machine making this syrup will be the hit of your party! I’d also love to test out mixing it in with homemade vanilla ice cream. Can you imagine, Skittles ice cream?! holy yum.
What will you be doing this summer? Are you hosting parties or attending bbq’s? It’s always fun to bring something new and unique to a gathering. This will totally be a hit! If you make it let me know, it makes me so happy to see you creating things from the blog! Share it with me in the comments or tag me on Instagram (@handmadeintheheartland) or facebook!
Happy summer celebrating friends!
