If you haven’t noticed I’ve been on a total apple kick this week. Apples just scream fall to me and this recipe will totally make you want to go snuggle under a soft blanket, watch a movie and enjoy this delicious cake. Did you know there is a special seasonal flavor of M&M’s out right now called candy apple? They taste just like milk chocolate with a hint of apple, the perfect little fall treat! I decided to incorporate them into this cake recipe by adding a delicious streusel on top complete with crushed up candy apple M&M’s. Holy yum batman, get ready to clean your plate!
I headed over to walmart to purchase ingredients for this recipe- the candy apple M&M’s were in a special display in the front of the store, photo above. Candy Apple M&M’s are exclusive to Walmart, so don’t drive yourself crazy going all over the place to look, Walmart is the only one that has them. Another new exciting flavor- candy corn M&M’s, they are a white chocolate base, so go get bag and taste fall in your mouth. 🙂 I also purchased Mott’s applesauce and Mott’s apple juice to add to the cake.
As you can tell in the photo below apple juice doesn’t last long in my house with a 2 and 3 year old! To help you out here are two coupons: $1 off any two (2) Mott’s sauce or Mott’s juice drink and $1.50 off any two (2) M&M’s brand chocolate candies.
Using Mott’s applesauce in this cake recipe makes it extra moist and delicious and then adding the streusel on top just puts it over the edge of Holy Yum! I even drizzled some extra caramel sauce over the top of it because I’m totally obsessed with my caramel sauce these days.
To make the streusel topping I crushed the candy apple m&m’s in my food processor until they were mostly dust and then mixed them with the other ingredients. The result was a wonderfully apple flavored crumb topping, yum!
Apple Cake with Candy Apple M&M’s Streusel
Ingredients (1 bundt)
For the Cake
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 eggs
- pinch of salt
- 3/4 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 1/3 cups all purpose flour
- 1/2 cup Mott’s applesauce
- 3/4 cup shredded apple
For the Streusel
- 1/4 cup Candy Apple M&M’s
- 1 Tablespoon flour
- 1 1/2 Tablespoons cold butter
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
Instructions
For the Cake
Preheat the oven to 350. First beat the butter until creamy, add the sugar, then the eggs and mix. Add the baking powder, vanilla, salt, and mix to combine. Add the flour alternately with the applesauce & shredded apples.
Pour into your 8″ round pan or bundt pan and bake for 30-40 minutes.
For the Streusel
Chop 1/4 cup of the M&M’s in a food processor until they are very small pieces, some will even be dust. In a stand mixer with a paddle attachment mix the m&m’s with the flour and brown sugar. Add in the cold butter cut into small pieces and mix for several minutes until it resembles a coarse meal.
When the cake comes out of the oven and cools a few minutes add the streusel on top. You can also top with caramel sauce if you wish.
