So i’m excited to show you a few more ways you can use polymer clay. You may remember the diy state necklace that I did, which was made from polymer clay. I love how versatile this material is, and making jewelry with it is so fun. My best advice is to just experiment, play and let your own creativity take over.
When working with polymer clay you want to start by warming it up in your hands, this will make it much easier to work with. Make sure your hands are clean and the surface you are working on is very clean, the clay picks up everything! Tools are important, especially wen you want to make beads, I love THIS basic 3 tool kit by scuply. The tool kit comes with a tool that has a thin pointed metal tip on one end that is perfect for poking the hole through the clay to make the opening in the beads that eventually the string or head pin goes through.
After you make your beads make sure to bake them according to the package directions. Once they are cooled you can start making jewelry. I wanted to make a necklace that had beads dropping off the chain so I used head pins and jump rings to achieve that. If you are unsure about jewelry making in general start with THIS post. When you use a head pin you want to slide the beads onto it, its great because the little flat end of the pin keeps the beads from falling off and then creates a little charm or element to add to your necklace. To finish off the element you are making with the head pin you will need to take needle nose plies and turn the top end to a circle once all your beads are on. You are creating a loop for the jump ring to go through or if your chain is big enough you can look that directly through the chain.
I also made some fun flat beads to put in between round beads in the necklace below. I rolled out the clay with a rolling pin and then using the knife looking sculpy tool I cut them the shape that I wanted. Don’t forget to poke a whole so you have a place for string or chain.
