Since we moved into our new house last July I have been slowly decorating each room. It’s funny how items you loved in a different space just don’t work anymore, and instead of getting rid of a perfectly good lamp I decided to upcycle it and create a totally new look for the baby’s room. I used my awesome Cricut Explore to cut out the fabric that I ironed on to the lampshade.
There really is no substitute for really cute fabric, I love the mod-vintage look this lamp took on after adding these darling fabric circles to the shade. As you can see in the photo above the lamp was black and had black keys on the shade. I painted the base with cream chalk paint and then redid the shade using the steps below.
For this project I used 5″ squares from the miss kate charm pack, you can find many listings to purchase them on Etsy. I love the prints and colors in this collection! I also used Heat-n-Bond ultra. You can read all my tips on cutting fabric in THIS post, here are a few tips- make sure you have a sharp blade, sticky mat and that you adhere the fabric well to the mat before it goes in the machine.
I cut the heat-n-bond into squares that were slightly smaller than the 5″ charm squares- so 4.75″ squares.
After ironing it to the back side of my fabric I placed it fabric side down onto my mat. I had a brand new mat so this worked, however if my mat wasn’t super sticky I would have put the paper side down.
I just used the cricut design space and added a shape- circle- and created several different sizes to be cut out. When I got to the cut preview screen I just made sure the circles were placed on the mat on the screen in the same areas where the charm squares were laid on my mat.
This project is so simple and fast! After having Cricut cut out all my circles I just used my iron to adhere them to my lampshade in my desired random pattern, thats the beauty of the Heat-n-Bond. 🙂 I love my Cricut, btw, it makes projects like this go 10x’s faster than if I tried cutting things out by hand. It’s a dream!
Because I was covering the keys I had to strategically place my circles to cover them up. I would have preferred to have a blank lampshade, however I didn’t spend any money on a new shade and that is always a plus! 😉
I just love how it turned out! I think painting the base really helped the entire look. Do you have an old lamp waiting to be redone? I hope this motivates you to do an upcycle!
