Hey friends! Are you getting ready for a super bowl party? You might have noticed earlier this week I put up an entire football party spread and these cute little football turnovers were included. Today I’ve got the recipe and tips on how to make them. When I was planning out the details on the football party I wanted a simple dessert that was delicious and cute. I had seen around pinterest people had made turnovers, using that pun to make a perfect dessert for the party. I took it one step further and cut out my dough with a football cookie cutter. I love how they turned out.
Caramel Apple Turnovers
Ingredients
For the Filling
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 3 large apples, sliced
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 3/4 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp all spice
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
For the Caramel Sauce
- 4 tablespoons water
- 2 tablespoons light corn syrup
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 2 tablespoons butter
2 Packages of Frozen Puff Pastry
Instructions
For the Filling
- Cut your apples into very small cubes. Mix the apples with the rest of the filling ingredients and set aside for 30 or so minutes so that the apples sweat and become a little juicy. I’ve placed them in the fridge in the morning and made the turnovers just before the party starts in the evening and it worked great.
For the Caramel Sauce
- You will probably only use 1/2 or 1/4 of this recipe, but go ahead and make the entire thing because its delicious and you can eat it on a million other things like ice cream. yum.
- Combine the sugar, water, and the corn syrup in a large saucepan and stir with a wooden spoon over medium heat until sugar is dissolved.
- Increase the heat to medium-high, and bring to a boil.
- Do not stir from this point on, but instead swirl the liquid around the pan so that the caramel doesn’t burn. Continue to cook until the caramel turns an even amber color then remove from the heat and let stand for about 30 seconds.
- Be careful here, Pour the heavy cream into the mixture. The mixture will bubble up significantly and is very hot.Stir the mixture with a spatula scraping the sides of the pot and combining all the ingredients, again be careful. Add the butter and stir until combined. As you stir you will see the caramel come to the consistency that you want and look like caramel! Let cool for a few minutes while you get the pie crust ready.
Making the Turnovers
- Open up your thawed puff pastry sheets, I like to take mine out of the freezer a few hours before I’m wanting to use them.
- Using a football cookie cutter cut out as many footballs as you can get out of each sheet. With the amount that the filling makes you’ll want to cut four sheets, cut the recipe in half for using just one package of puff pastry.
- Place a little bit of caramel sauce onto one football, add a spoonful of filling and then place another football on top. Using a fork press the sides down so the bottom and top layer seal together. Use a knife and make football lines on the top of the turnover.
- Bake at 400 for around 15-20 minutes, you’ll want them to be slightly brown and puffed up. Let cool for 5-10 minutes.
